We Are Making Sustainability a Business Priority

Sustainability is a topic – and measurement – that we care about. Our family of companies: South Atlantic, ProStar and Versatile is working hard to trim carbon emissions and reduce what we haul to the landfill. We believe it is important to be good environmental stewards. We are locating our facilities near bus routes for our employees and encouraging bike ridership. We also are making sure our facilities are focused on operating efficiently. It’s in our own best interests and it’s the right thing to do.

Here’s a look at our 2024 Sustainability Report:

Looking Back: 2021 Report

A team of students from the Wake Forest University School of Business Master’s in Management program spent the semester producing the first annual sustainability report for South Atlantic Packaging, ProStar Packaging and Versatile Packagers. They calculated our collective carbon footprint, researched available methods and technologies for reducing environmental impact, and helped us chart a course for the future. We also collaborated on the development of a comprehensive sustainability strategy, incorporating an integrated quality policy that focuses on both environmental and social aspects of sustainability, community involvement and customer feedback.

This report, published in advance of Earth Day, includes a breakdown of our carbon emissions, the majority of which come from consumed electricity, with 604 metric tons of carbon. To reduce our carbon footprint, we plan to analyze the benefits of LED lighting and solar energy across all three facilities.

By 2030, we proudly pledge to reduce our scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions by 50% and to have net zero emissions by 2050.

“We’ve enjoyed the opportunity to contribute to the companies’ sustainability strategies, and we anticipate our work will create opportunities for sustainability initiatives across the contract packaging industry,” said Kristin Knight, Wake Forest team member. “We are grateful for this opportunity and recognize the importance of sustainable business for the future of our planet.”

Sustainability, particularly in consumer packaged goods, has continually grown in importance as consumers seek products and delivery that align with their values to be more eco-friendly. In order to continue improving, we look forward to reducing our ecological impact and striving for improvements across all aspects of the co-packing business, including waste reduction, sustainable energy sources, and greater use of recycling/recyclable materials.
